The present law firm of Tallents can trace its roots back to two Newark law firms. The first one was Tallents & Co, which was founded by Mr Philip Tallents, who was admitted as a solicitor in 1774.
The other part of the firm was Hodgkinson and Beevor, which was started by Grosvenor Hodgkinson in the mid- 19th Century. His son, Mr Robert Hodgkinson, went into partnership with Mr Henry Beevor in about 1900 and the firm moved to its present home at 3 Middlegate in 1901.
No 3 Middlegate was built as a private house for Mr Joseph Pocklingon in 1807. It was later a school and then Hodgkinson & Beevor took occupation leading to the first use of the building as solicitors’ offices.
The offices in Southwell and Mansfield were brought into the firm more recently. In 1988 the firm merged with Temperly and Co of 2 Westgate Southwell and in 1989 with Harding and Co of Mansfield establishing its presence in those towns.
From 1st January 2004 the firm reverted to the old name of Tallents Solicitors practising from three offices in Newark, Southwell and Mansfield.
2009 sees the 235th birthday of Tallents – one of the oldest law firms in the region, if not the United Kindgom.
1774 - Mr. Philip Tallents admitted as a solicitor and Tallents & Co founded in Newark.
1807 - Tallents' present Newark office, No. 3 Middlegate, was built for Mr. Joseph Pocklington.
1900 - Hodgkinson and Beevor solicitors created by Robert Hodgkinson and Henry Beevor.
1901 - Hodgkinson and Beevor move to 3 Middlegate in Newark.
1970 - Hodgkinson and Beevor merge with Tallents & Co to become Hodgkinson and Tallents.
1988 - A merger with Temperley and Co. creates the Southwell office.
1989 - A merger with Harding and Co. creates the Mansfield office.
2004 - The firm reverts to the original name of Tallents Solicitors.
2009 - Tallents celebrates 235 successful years in business.
