As the number of applications for children to be taken into the care system in England hit an all-time high this year, Children law specialist, Mark Hawkins at Tallents Solicitors in Mansfield, looks at the data in more detail.

Mark said:

Local authorities (LA) are committed to protecting vulnerable children and young people from harm and the care process is only started when the LA has serious concerns about the child’s safety.

The Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass) recently released the total number of care applications for 2015/16, showing that 12,741 LA care applications, involving 21,666 children, were made between April 2015 and March 2016.

This is the highest ever recorded number of care applications, and represents a 14% increase on the number of applications made in 2014/15.
