Having been part of the community for hundreds of years, Tallents is always delighted when it can forge closer links with the people and places where its offices are based. Here are some of our most recent activities.

Palace Theatre Newark

Tallents is very proud to renew their agreement to be the Principal Sponsor of the Palace Theatre Newark, having sponsored the venue since 2015.

In 2020, Tallents Solicitors was also delighted to be the Palace Theatre’s Centenary Sponsor, which has helped to create the ‘Our Past Your Future’ Fund, a legacy scheme set up in celebration of the 2020 centenary as a thank you to the local community. If you live within Newark and Sherwood, were aged between 16-25 on 1 January 2022 and are looking to pursue a career in the arts, whether performing, writing, directing or technical, this initiative can offer funding to help you achieve your goals. In July 2022, following a round of applications and interviews by a panel made up of representatives from the Theatre, Newark and Sherwood District Council and Principal Sponsors Tallents Solicitors, Ella Lighten was selected as the first recipient of a £1,500 grant.

Commenting on the sponsorship of the Palace Theatre Newark, Senior Partner, Alistair Millar said,

“I think it’s a fine link up between two historic and well-known names and brands in Newark. Personally, I have a strong interest in local history.

“The Palace Theatre is now over 100 years old, having celebrated their centenary in 2020 and Tallents Solicitors have been in Newark for over 247 years. Between us, that’s nearly 350 years of serving this fine community. And now we have the lasting legacy of the ‘Our Past Your Future’ Fund to help support and nurture future generations of artistic talent in our community.

“This continuing sponsorship is a fantastic opportunity for Tallents to support and promote the Palace Theatre and for us all to work together. We are very excited to be involved and supporting the performing arts in the East Midlands.”

Newark Book Festival

Tallents Solicitors was delighted to be the sponsor of the Children’s and Young Person’s Programme in 2017; the inaugural event for the Newark Book Festival. In 2023, we are proud to confirm our sponsorship again of the Children’s Programme as the Newark Book Festival returns, bigger and better than ever.

Taking place across three days in July, the festival celebrates local literary heritage, fictional worlds, and highlights the importance of location in fiction and non-fiction writing. Each year, the Festival builds on the success of the previous event with a themed marketplace full of literary inspired stalls and performances for the whole family to enjoy. The very popular family workshops take place in venues around the town and attract visitors from all over the East Midlands.

Tallents Solicitors, which is sponsoring the children’s programme said: “Newark Book Festival is a wonderful event to be a part of. It has proved to be extremely popular and it captured the town’s imagination, bringing thousands of people into Newark. It really is a celebration of all things literature and there’s something for everyone, young and old. We’re proud to be helping the festival build on its success to become even bigger and better for another year.”

Newark and District Schools Chess League

Tallents is proud to have sponsored the Newark and District Schools Chess League since it started in 2008. The sponsorship allows the League to provide three free coaching sessions for the League members each year and also to give the children who participate medals and trophies.

The League currently comprises of teams of four children from primary schools across Newark and the surrounding area. Boys and girls of any age and from any local primary school are invited to join the League, no matter what level chess they play at. The school doesn’t have to have a chess club in order to participate, just four children and an interested adult or teacher.

If your child or school would like to take part in the League, please contact Graham Ladds on 01636 821891.

Newark Parish Church Christmas Tree Festival

Tallents Solicitors is delighted to be a Gold Sponsor of the annual Newark Parish Church Christmas Tree Festival, an event which sees more than 100 local businesses, schools and charities decorate their own Christmas trees in Newark Parish Church.

Previous themes have seen Santa putting his feet up on a sandy beach after rushing around the world on Christmas Eve to deliver all the children’s Christmas presents. Office manager, Lucinda McDonald said: “It’s to reflect what we do for our customers; they can relax and we’ll do all the work for them.”

In 2022, Santa was joined by his hardworking elves as they wrapped lots of presents for him to deliver in his brand new hot air balloon. We think Rudolph and the reindeers were taking a well deserved break!

Newark Rugby Union Football Club

Tallents Solicitors is proud to be a Bronze Sponsor of the Newark Rugby Union Football Club.

Rugby Football was formally played in Newark on 19 December 1891, when a challenge match took place on the Sconce Hills between a team from Newark and a team from Nottingham. The Newark team was composed from the people of Newark to “this side of Bingham”.

This match is assumed to be the first to be formally played in Newark, although a press caption of several issues prior to the event states “that Newarkers do not often enjoy the chance of seeing Rugby Football” giving further claim that there had been a Military Unit playing a type of Rugby Football before this date.

Balderton Cricket Club

Tallents Solicitors is proud to be a Sponsor of Balderton Cricket Club. In 2022 the Saturday 1st team had a successful first season in the Nottinghamshire Premier League Division 2, finishing fourth and the 2nd team finished mid-table in South Notts League Division F. The Sunday team won their league with strong performances from the junior players.

The sponsorship has helped the club purchase new training kit and balls for the 2022 season plus support the day to day running of the club. In 2023, the club is hoping to use the sponsorship to improve the club house facilities. The improvements will include adding a disabled toilet, better access into the club house, updating existing toilets, modernising the bar and seating area to make it more welcoming and changing the existing strip lights for more energy efficient LEDs.
